LAWRENCE, Mass. (WHDH) -- -
The family of Jose Diaz is devastated after their loved one was hit by a drunk driver in Lawrence.
The 24-year-old is in the ICU at fighting to survive.
Jose’s cousin Eliel Diaz said he saw the accident in which Jose was injured, but it wasn’t until he ran to help that he realized who he was helping.
“I kind of tried to wake him up a little bit, I screamed at him “It’s me, it’s me it’s Eliel it’s your cousin wake up.’ He kind of reacted, he woke up and opened his eyes and he tells me ‘am I going to die?’” Diaz said.
The crash occurred Saturday night at the intersection of Haverhill and Warren Street. Prosecutors say the driver who hit Diaz is 21-year-old Nathan Sanborn Jr. of Kensington N.H.
Sanborn allegedly had a blood alcohol level of 0.17, twice the legal limit, when he was arrested.
Jose Diaz remains unresponsive in the hospital, doctors say the next few days will be critical to his recovery.
“We want him to walk, we want him to talk the way that he did. It’s just a waiting process that we’re in right now, it’s not good,” Eliel Diaz said.
Sanborn is due in court again in February.
