Somerville two-alarm fire displaces seven

SOMERVILLE, Mass. (WHDH) - Firefighters battled the bitter cold while fighting a two-alarm fire on Mount Vernon Street in Somerville on Thursday.

The chief says the flames were one thing, but the frigid conditions created extra challenges.

“Firefighters who were outside and an extended to other buildings were all covered with ice. Guys working inside that's like normal. When they come out, they start freezing pick up,” said Chief Kevin Kelleher, Somerville Fire Dept.

Seven people were left homeless in the two unit apartment building; all were brought to a mobile heated trailer to keep warm.

“The trailer is completely heated. They’re seats and they can take off their turn out gear get comfortable. Our guys can do medical attention and they are out the environment,” said Doug McCall, Cataldo Ambulance.

Crews were busy spreading salt around the fire scene on the street and on the sidewalks as well.

Those are being helped out by the Red Cross, while the cause remains under investigation.
