Keating: Sochi security enhanced by vigilance

Posted: Updated:
BOSTON (WHDH) - Congressman Bill Keating is back in Boston after his Russian trip and review of the Sochi security threats.

"It's clearly something President Putin and Russia as a country, want to use as an avenue to really get on the world stage, and to promote. Unfortunately there is terrorist activity in that area,” Keating said.

There have been two suicide bombings in the past month and just this week the US Olympic Team got an email threat that officials don’t believe is credible.

Keating says there will be a massive show of security. A so-called 'ring of steel' securing the main venues and in the mountains and the Russian army is deployed rockets to shoot down a 9/11 style attack.

“You probably will see the most secure security amassed, certainly one of the most, of any worldwide event,” Keating said.

The Olympic venues are spread out over two main sections; the coastal cluster on the black sea where you'll find the stadiums for various events and 30 miles away, is the mountain cluster  for the skiing and sledding events.

The US will have the second largest presence of citizens in Sochi and a travel alert has been issued for any Americans planning to attend.

"I think your chances of being secure and safe are enhanced greatly by being vigilant, and listening to what the experts, our country’s experts are saying,” Keating said.
