State politicians gather to honor Martin Luther King, Jr.
State politicians gathered at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center on Monday to honor Martin Luther King, Jr.
The 44th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Breakfast featured speeches from Gov. Deval Patrick, Mayor Marty Walsh and Senator Elizabeth Warren, who all came out to honor the civil rights hero.
Event proceeds fund student scholarships and community programs sponsored by Union United Methodist Church and St. Cyprian's Episcopal Church.
Politicians also appeared at other events around the city to commemorate King's accomplishments. Mayor Walsh visited the Museum of Fine Arts for the institution's annual Open House.
Senator Markey's office released statements for the holiday, saying that King's memory is more important than ever in 2014.
"In America today, nearly half of those who grow up in families in the bottom fifth of income earners will stay there as adults. This is unacceptable; this is immoral, and on this day, we must recommit ourselves to change this," Markey said.
