Firefighters had to deal with the elements while they were battling a two-alarm fire at the Our Lady of Good Counsel School in Lawrence early Sunday.
Fighters were able to contain the fire to the multi-purpose room in the former school building.
The cause remains under investigation. While officials have not confirmed anything, signs point to vandals that broke in through a window.
Father Chris Casey, the pastor at the church, said that the fire started in a file cabinet and spread quickly.
Casey said that the suspect or suspects pulled the fire alarm, which alerted the Lawrence Fire Department.
The pastor hopes that the suspects have learned a lesson.
“Maybe when you see the destruction and danger caused you can reflect that this is not what I want to do with my life,” Casey said.
Parishioners at the church prayed during mass on Sunday for whoever started the fire.
“Breaks my heart, because even though the building’s empty it’s very dear to me. I love this school,” one woman said.
Firefighters say that they weren't able to have the religious meetings on Sunday, but fortunately nothing else in the building was ruined so those classes will be able to continue.
