Welcome Back Winter

Posted: Updated:
After a January thaw, our weather turned back to winter today, and in a big way.  As an east to northeast wind turned more north, that was all she wrote for the rain/snow battle, as it turned to all snow for most of us, excluding parts of far Southeast Mass.  With colder air in place and moisture and instability pumping in, it was quite a burst of snow through the afternoon.  Snow totals will hover around 2-4" of clumpy, wet snow around I-95, to 4-6" west of  I-95 and out into Worcester County, and up the Merrimack Valley and parts of Southern N.H.  There may even be a few 6-8" pockets in the Merrimack Valley. In terms of timing, we're in and out of these bursts of snow through the afternoon, but it'll taper off this evening, yielding to a quiet overnight.

The slush will freeze overnight, so it'll be easier to move today vs. early tomorrow.

I don't see many issues tomorrow and on Monday as highs reach the mid to upper 30s with a passing flurry and a bit of a breeze.  In fact, it'll be good weather for skiing and sledding.

Monday night, the freezer type weather comes back in, and by Tuesday, highs don't get out of the teens.  The core of the cold sticks around into the end of the week with a chance of some snow late Thursday.  Any moderation in temps to start next weekend is short lived as another round of cold likely barrels in.
