Class Act: Kylee McCumber

Posted: Updated:
LEOMINSTER, Mass. (WHDH) -- A young girl from Leominster is doing amazing things. Kylee McCumber is 11-years-old and she took on the task of feeding kids in need.

The Skyview Middle schooler is helping to feed kids in need, in her hometown of Leominster.

“It makes me feel good that I know that I can help,” said MCCumber.

The idea came to her last year, when she saw some classmates eating their breakfast in the school cafeteria.

“I explained to her that there are children in the community, who don’t have the food that we have at our homes and they get breakfast and lunch for free during the school days. She got worried about what happens on the weekend,” said McCumber’s grandmother Lori Bateman.

That's when she created Kylee's Kare Kits for Kidz - individual bags, filled with two days worth of breakfast and lunch foods. They’re filled with things like cereal, oatmeal, fresh fruit and mac-and-cheese.

They pack the Kare Kits every week and drop them off at schools each Friday.

McCumber got her girlfriends to pitch in.

“I was totally surprised. I didn't think I would have so many friends that would to actually get involved and help so much,” said McCumber.

“I like helping kids. It makes me feel good to help kids in need,” said McCumber’s friend Mia Losey.

To raise money to buy the food, they hold community fundraisers, have sponsors and they even won a grant from the United Way.

“It costs about $100, a little bit more sometimes, throughout the whole school year to feed one child. At the end of last year we were up to 50 kids, and I never thought we would be able to do it, but we doubled our amount,” said McCumber.

McCumber wants to bring her care kits to even more kids in the future and she and her grandmother want to thank everyone who lends a hand.

“We could never do this by ourselves and Kylee knows that. It takes a village and shes got a village of friends,” said Bateman.

"Kylee's Kare Kits for Kidz" has applied to become an official non-profit organization. Their application is under review.
