A boffo Tuesday night for the CW

Posted: Updated:

The CW’s Tuesday night is in a groove.

For the second straight week, the network posted a five-year high on the night among total viewers, with new drama “The Originals” hitting a new series high.

“Originals” and “Supernatural” combined to average 2.446 million total viewers in primetime, according to Nielsen overnights, the best for the CW on a Tuesday since Nov. 4, 2008.

“Originals” averaged 2.443 million total viewers at 8 p.m., a new best, while lead-out “Supernatural” posted 2.45 million.

Both programs aired their fall finales, with new episodes not slated to return until next year.

The shows both ranked third in their timeslots among adults 18-34, though that was against a number of repeats on the Big Four networks.

NBC, which easily won the night in 18-49s, was the only Big Four network to run all original shows on this first Tuesday after the November sweeps ended.

In fact, NBC won all six half-hours on the night, including the 10 p.m. hour, where “Chicago Fire” drew its best rating since Oct. 15, a 2.3.

CBS was entirely in repeats last night, and ABC and Fox’s top-rated Tuesday programs (“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” and “New Girl,” respectively) were both reruns.

Fox’s new comedies both saw week-to-week gains at 8 p.m., with “Dads” up 17 percent to a 1.4 and “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” up 7 percent to a 1.6.

NBC averaged a 2.6 18-49 overnight rating and a 7 share to lead for the night. CBS was second at 1.4/4, Fox third at 1.3/4, ABC, CW and Univision tied for fourth at 1.1/3, and Telemundo was seventh at 0.6/2.

As a reminder, all ratings are based on live-plus-same-day DVR playback, which includes shows replayed before 3 a.m. the night before. Seven-day DVR data won’t be available for several weeks. Forty-eight percent of Nielsen households have DVRs.

At 8 p.m. NBC was first with a 2.0 for “The biggest Loser,” followed by CBS with a 1.6 for a repeat of “NCIS.” Fox was third with a 1.5 for “Dads” (1.4) and “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” (1.6), Univision fourth with a 1.2 for “Por Siempre Mi Amor,” CW fifth with a 1.1 for “Originals,” ABC sixth with a 0.9 for a repeat of “S.H.I.E.L.D.,” and Telemundo seventh with a 0.5 for “Marido en Alquiler.”

NBC extended its lead at 9 p.m. with a 3.3 for “Voice,” while CBS remained second with a 1.4 for a repeat of “NCIS: Los Angeles.” ABC was third with a 1.3 for “The Goldbergs” (1.4) and “Trophy Wife” (1.1), and Univision fourth with a 1.2 for “Lo Que La Vida Me Robo.” Fox and CW tied for fifth at 1.1, Fox for a rerun of “Girl” (0.9) and a new “The Mindy Project” (1.2) and CW for “Supernatural,” and Telemundo was seventh with a 0.7 for “La Reina del Sur.”

At 10 p.m. NBC was first again with a 2.3 for “Fire,” with CBS second with a 1.3 for a “Person of Interest” rerun. ABC was third with a 1.0 for “Primetime: What Would You Do?,” Univision fourth with a 0.9 for “Mentir para Vivir,” and Telemundo fifth with a 0.6 for “Santa Diabla.”

CBS finished first for the night among households with a 6.6 average overnight rating and an 11 share. NBC was second at 5.6/9, ABC third at 2.4/4, Fox fourth at 1.8/3, CW and Univision tied for fifth at 1.5/2 and Telemundo seventh at 0.8/2.
