In favor of gun rights and gun control

Posted: Updated:

Suppose you asked someone what they thought about the shooting at the Washington Navy Yard, and they just shrugged and said, "Who cares? What difference does it make?"

Would you be disgusted, and sickened? Or would you think, maybe that's the only healthy response we have left?

Because we've seen it before; we're seeing it once more now; and we'll see it again in the future.

America has gotten to the point where mass shootings and mass murders are almost routine.

So I'd be surprised if this latest tragedy really surprises you, because why should it?

Remember the slaughter at Sandy Hook elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut...where 20 kids were killed?

We all talked a lot about that...but we didn't change anything.

Congress defeated some proposed gun control, and we moved on... to the Washington Navy Yard.

Let's face it: guns are just one more issue that divides us.

Ask Americans which is more important--controlling gun ownership or protecting the right to own guns ...and it's 50-48.

Politically, that's a dead heat and it's led to a dead end.

I understand the split. Personally, I favor gun rights and gun control.

That's not a contradiction: I think people should have guns, but I don't think everyone should have any gun they want.

That may be reasonable but, like the Washington Navy Yard, I don't expect it will change many votes.
