For different reasons, I think this is what Washington Republicans and Democrats both want because both parties believe public opinion is on their side, and that's why each side thinks it can "win" the shutdown.
The Democrats say Americans don't want the government to shut down, and polls say that's correct.
But Republicans counter that Americans don't want Obamacare, and they have polls showing that's true, too.
So the shutdown could be a tie-breaker that will force one party to surrender to the other.
But it's more likely the shutdown won't solve anything.
Because the political split in Washington won't suddenly disappear when the shutdown ends as it ultimately will.
Instead, the division may become deeper.
Whichever side "wins" will feel superior.
Whichever "loses" will be looking for a chance to get even,
And that chance is the fight next month over raising the debt ceiling.
So, bring on the shutdown! Which really is at most a slowdown if that's what Washington wants.
Then, finally, we can all see what actually happens instead of just hearing threats of chaos.
