CHICOPEE, Mass. (AP) -- A 23-year-old Springfield man has been killed and a 22-year-old woman wounded in an altercation with a Massachusetts state trooper during a routine traffic stop.
State police say the trooper stopped the pair at about 12:20 a.m. on Interstate 91 in Chicopee.
Police say at some point the male driver became combative, and began struggling with the officer, who then fired shots into the vehicle.
Both the driver and his passenger were taken to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, where the man was pronounced dead. The woman was treated and released. Police say it's not clear if she was shot or injured in another way.
Police have not released the names of those involved. They say the trooper, who has been placed on administrative leave, joined the force in 2012.
