LEOMINSTER, Mass. (WHDH) — A string of school bus crashes in Leominster has the city's mayor calling for action. He wants to provide police escorts for school buses.
“Do I get a police escort to my job? That's a little bit much,” said Bonnie Chesborough.
Since two school buses rear ended since the start of the school year, the mayor wants action.
The town has ten schools, 38 buses – driving about 90 routes – and carrying more than 5,000 students.
“As you can see, it's virtually impossible for us to cover even a fraction of those buses,” said Chief Robert Healey, Leominster police.
The chief is letting his officers know the bus routes so they can monitor them when they’re not fighting crime.
“Officers have better things to do than following school buses,” said Kris Perez.
Leominster's school superintendent wants drivers to do their part.
“The responsibility is with the drivers who are on the road behind the school buses. They need to pay attention,” said Jim Jolicoeur, school superintendent.
Fortunately, there have been no injuries but everyone is hoping there will be no more accidents.
