Details released in Somerville soccer camp assault

PITTSFIELD, Mass. (WHDH) -- One Somerville High School student is being held in jail, accused of raping a freshman. Police say it happened at a soccer retreat in western Mass.

“My client didn't do anything, he was at the wrong place at the wrong place at the wrong time,” Galileo Mondol’s attorney William Korman said.

But prosecutors paint him as the ring leader in a brutal sexual assault on three junior varsity soccer teammates at a camp in the Berkshires.

He was arrested with two 16-year-olds who are charged as juveniles.

“The defendant and the co-defendants entered and began saying things along the lines of we’re going to pick someone, it’s you, no, it’s you, pointing to various freshman that were in the cabin at one point one of them picked up a broom,” Rachel Eramo, prosecuting attorney, said.

Prosecutors said one victim was left crying and bleeding.

Mondol's parents had no comment leaving court, but his attorney said Mondol tried to prevent the alleged attack.

"None of these boys should have been in the cabin. But when my client was in the cabin, and saw what was about to occur the first think he said to the co-defendant was don't do this. Don't do it,” Korman said.

Prosecutors say Mondol and two other juniors later intimidated witnesses in person then on social media.

"Someone reports that they were laughing after the assault occurred, that they said words to the effect of you're not going to tell anybody, you better be quiet about this,” Eramo said.

Mondol will appear on Friday at a dangerousness hearing. The two juveniles were arraigned on similar charges on Tuesday.
