WOONSOCKET, R.I. (NBC) — A quick-thinking teenager comes to the rescue when a Woonsocket woman's car ends up on a partially frozen pond.

The car somehow broke through a guardrail where Elm Street meets Cass Avenue.

"Oh you know, so crazy, I never saw happen like that," said Jetty Cherian, who works at a nearby convenience store.

An NBC 10 viewer emailed the station the name of the Woonsocket High School student she saw as the only one to drop everything and run to help while others watched, saying "I've been losing faith in kids his age for some time now. It's good to see there are still a few good kids out there."

That "good kid" is Kyle Mulvey.

"I thought that the lady was trying to avoid a bus that was coming. I don't know if she didn't see it or if she saw it last second, and tried to get out of the way," Kyle said.

The car slammed through the guardrail, careened down the embankment, slid onto the ice and wound up in the middle of the partially frozen pond.

"I crossed the street and then I dropped my bag," Kyle said.

He had to walk around to another part of the pond where he thought the ice would be stronger.

"I walked across the ice," Kyle said. "I saw her banging on the window because she couldn't get the door open. So, I pulled the door open and just grabbed her and got her out and walked her over to the shore.

Others called 911, and Kyle went to school.

The woman in the crash, Viengxay Kmon, was too distraught to talk, but she wanted to thank Kyle for coming to help.

The assistant principal, Carnell Henderson, is also the football coach.

"We kind of called him the heartbeat of our team, you know, the pulse of what we do. So, it would be no surprise that he would put his life in jeopardy for someone else," Henderson said.

"Pretty crazy. It woke me up, I'll tell you that," Kyle said. "I'm just happy she's alright."
