WESTPORT, R.I. (WHDH) — A stray dog in Westport, Rhode Island was found alive, but shot multiple times and now animal rescuers are trying to find the shooter.

The year-old pit bull was found by an animal control officer, suffering from multiple gunshots to his leg and chest.

The bullets fractured his leg and he still has some shrapnel in his body.

It looks like the dog, now named Liam, was shot on Wednesday or Thursday.

“Right now we are going to be opening a cruelty investigation, to find out if we can find out who shot the dog. We also need donations for his medical treatment,” said Heather Gutshall, founder, Handsome Dan’s Rescue.

Handsome Dan’s Rescue is an organization fully supported by volunteers and donations, taking on the most challenging cases in the region, including a pit bull from Providence who needed a hip replacement.

The rescue agency will monitor Liam's recovery during the next few weeks. The dog may have to get a leg amputated.
