Protests planned for new bridge toll

Posted: Updated:

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- Residents unhappy with a new 10-cent toll on Rhode Island's Sakonnet River Bridge are vowing to protest.

Portsmouth resident John Vitkevich says a protest event is planned for Sunday evening at the bridge, which connects Portsmouth and Tiverton.

The toll will begin on Monday.

Vitkevich is encouraging motorists with E-ZPass transponders to leave the devices in a shielding bag or at home to avoid automatically paying the toll.

The Turnpike and Bridge Authority says drivers without transponders won't be sent a bill but are obligated to submit payments on their own with a check, cash, credit card or online payment.

Vitkevich says motorists opposed to the toll should respect the law -- but he suggests they send checks for $1 or another small amount to voice their displeasure.
