NEWTOWN, Conn. (AP) — The dream of the high school football team in Newtown, Conn., to win a state championship in honor of the 26 victims killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School has come to an end.

Newtown High School was 12-0 and seeded No. 1 headed into the Class LL quarterfinals Tuesday evening against 9-2 Ridgefield, but lost 35-33 after a last-second comeback bid fell short.

Newtown scored a touchdown with about 16 seconds left but failed on a two-point conversion attempt to tie the game. The Nighthawks had rallied from a 35-13 deficit.

Newtown High dedicated the season to the 20 first-graders and six adults killed at the elementary school on Dec. 14, 2012.
