HYANNIS, Mass. (WHDH) — An elderly woman was sent to the hospital after fire damaged her home. Police believe someone targeted the 89-year-old woman’s home.

Flames erupted at the home a Hyannis woman rents. It was clear to officials that the fire had been set.

“What they did is put a mattress up against the side of the house and ignited it. The mattress went up, got into the eaves and started a pretty good, hot fire into the attic,” said an official.

The woman uses a wheelchair. She was pulled through the front door by her grandson. She was brought to the hospital as a precaution. She will be okay, but cannot return to her home.

Family members salvaged what they could from the home.

The family believes the people who set the fire are neighborhood kids involved in a feud.

“It does look suspicious due — these juveniles were fighting over, like, a bicycle. Something so ridiculous somebody could have lost their life over that,” said an official.

Police said there have been many problems. Officials won’t name suspects, but confirmed they are questioning some juveniles.

“They have a grudge against my kid, my son,” said one man.

The family wants to resolve any potential conflicts before someone gets seriously injured.
