SANDWICH, Mass. (WHDH) — A Cape Cod teenager found more than $1,000 in cash while he was out walking his dog on Halloween. The 13-year-old noticed the bags and looked inside. When he saw the money, he didn’t hesitate to do the right thing. Now he is learning that honesty pays.

For 13-year-old Jack Sheehan, honesty is indeed the best policy. He was walking his dog Cooper in Sandwich on Halloween when he came across a heck of a find.

“I saw the bags in the middle of the road, which was a little bit odd, so I just kind of went over to see what it was and I saw the money in the bag,” said Sheehan.

Inside the bag was $1,300 in cash and bank deposit slip. A pretty good score for a kid that likes video games, but Sheehan never once thought to keep the cash.

“I would have had like a guilty conscience for the longest time,” said Sheehan.

Instead, he and his mom called police and traced it to the Mashpee Country Store.

“In our family, honesty is a big thing,” said Sheehan’s mother.

It appeared the store owner put the bag on the roof of his car and drove away.

“Then he drive the car and forgot to pick up the bag,” said Mohammad Rafiq, brother of Mohammad Ahmad, the owner of the Mashpee Country Store.

The bag eventually landed in the middle of the road in front of the Sheehan home in Sandwich. Rafiq said Sheehan’s actions won't soon be forgotten.

“If we lost it, we would forget it in a couple of months – but why he did – we will not forget that,” said Rafiq of Sheehan.

That makes Jack feel better about making the right and honest choice.

“It just makes you feel good that they appreciate what I did,” said Sheehan.
