It wasn’t exactly a balmy day out there with a gusty wind, but mid 40s in January certainly is above the average and it gives the chance for the snow piles and ice to further melt.
That breeze subsides overnight and with clearer skies in place later, many towns go back below the freezing mark for the first time in a couple days. Despite the cooler start to Monday morning, it’ll be a stellar mid January day with highs near 50 degrees and a mainly sunny sky. The breeze gusts to 20-25mph at times from the southwest, but won’t be as active or chilling as the one we had today.
Tuesday features more mild weather, however, it’ll be a wet day overall with rain moving in as a wave of low pressure slides by us. Rain is steadiest across eastern MA, especially over the South Shore/Cape/Islands.
We’ll catch a break in the precip Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, then a front brings in a couple rain showers Wednesday afternoon. As the front crosses, temps drop a bit and a few snow showers are possible Wednesday night. Along that front, we’ll have to watch an area of low pressure that tries to develop off the coast. If that happens, some snow could linger into Thursday. Right now, the storm doesn’t look to be a big one for us as the “phasing” of energy in the atmosphere looks to be too late.
Friday is a seasonable and dry day.
Next weekend, the trend is down in the temp department as a quick moving system brings a few flurries or snow showers Saturday and highs in the lower 30s. We won’t get out of the 20s on Sunday.
So the trend is down on the 7day forecast. While next weekend looks colder, it’s not as cold as the Arctic air mass we just had. However, long range guidance continues to indicate to a colder pattern for the Midwest and Northeast by the last 5-6 days of January. Bottom line, enjoy the thaw now, winter is likely a long way from over.
