Wisconsin's Recall Election

Posted: Updated:

After you check the Celtics score tonight, check out the results in Wisconsin...where there's a political playoff game. A recall election that could change that state, and the presidential race...

“Hey, hey, ho, ho, Scott Walker has to go!” protestors chanted.

Remember the loud, labor led protests last March in Wisconsin?

The demonstrations followed Republican Governor Scott Walker's moves to curb collective bargaining rights for public employees.

Walker said he had to do it to balance Wisconsin's budget:

"That's what's really at stake, whether we're going to move the state forward or backwards,” Gov. Walker said.

But Democrats argued he was union busting, and, together, they're attempting to remove walker from office.

"The Right Wing loves him, because he's doing exactly what they want him to do. He's not doing what the people in Wisconsin want,” Democratic challenger and Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett said. Barrett lost to Walker in 2010, and now says Walker deserves to lose his job.

"Scott Walker's reforms are not working for the middle class," Mayor Barrett said.

But Walker argues they are:

"We've moved the state forward. A billion dollars worth of savings and property tax relief,” Gov. Walker said.

The campaign has been expensive and nasty.

Republicans have sent in their heavyweights, including Mitt Romney and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie.

And while Wisconsin Democrats didn't get Barack Obama, they did get former President Bill Clinton

Given the long, divisive campaign, all voters there might agree:

"I'd like to see Wisconsin get back to the calm, friendly place it used to be," one voter said.

Don't hold your breath.

Democrats--apparently anticipating coming up short--are already talking about a recount, which could keep the outcome in limbo for weeks.

And if Walker wins, then Mitt Romney can start thinking about being the first Republican to carry Wisconsin since Ronald Reagan in 1984.
