RI to open 4 beaches for weekend use

Posted: Updated:

WESTERLY, R.I. (AP) -- Rhode Island is reopening its beaches for Memorial Day weekend.

The state will open Scarborough North, Roger Wheeler, East Matunuck and Misquamicut state beaches from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. The freshwater beach at Lincoln Woods State Park will also open Saturday.

All remaining state beaches will be open beginning Monday.

Superstorm Sandy caused significant damage along Rhode Island's southern shore, and crews have since repaired beach facilities and replaced much of the sand that was lost to erosion.

This year's residential beach parking passes cost $10 on weekdays and $14 on weekends and holidays. Non-residents pay $20 for weekdays and $28 for weekends and holidays. Senior citizens pay half price.

Season passes cost $60 for residents and $120 for non-residents.
