PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Rhode Island State Police say a man driving in Providence with two children in the back seat of his SUV was stopped by troopers after they received calls of a possibly intoxicated motorist going slowly, drifting from lane to lane and nearly hitting other vehicles on Route 95 South.
Troopers stopped the SUV late Saturday. They say 46-year-old Michael D. Baldwin of Deep River, Conn., was going 28 mph in a 55 mph zone. Troopers say he failed sobriety tests, was taken to police barracks and scored high on a blood-alcohol test there.
Police say the children, his 11- and 7-year-old daughters, were released to their grandfather. Baldwin was arraigned Sunday on a charge of driving under the influence of liquor and/or drugs. He was released on his own recognizance.
