Support grows for sgt. who released Tsarnaev photos

Posted: Updated:

BOSTON (WHDH) -- Arizona Senator John McCain called the “Rolling Stone” cover featuring Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev “stupid”. This comes as support grows for the Massachusetts State Police sergeant who released unauthorized photos of the suspected bomber’s arrest.

Sgt. Sean Murphy is set to go before a committee later this week. His job status is in the air, but most people in Boston are standing by him.

“The whole country was wrapped up in it while it was happening, might as well see what actually happened as a result,” said one man.

The fight to save the sergeant’s job has gone viral -- a Facebook page as been set up in his support and it has gained over 33,000 fans.

“I’m all for it, will go online tonight and like that page for sure,” said a man.

Anthony Cali was running the Boston Marathon in April. It would have been his 10th finish. He applauds the sergeant.

“I can understand that he probably should have went to some to some certain channels to get those pictures out there, but I can totally understand and justify his frustration, just like the public that was affected by this,” said Cali.

The photos were released last week after growing outrage over the Rolling Stone cover. Even politicians are weighting in.

“I thought it was stupid. I thought it was inappropriate,” said McCain.

State police are not commenting.
