CHARLESTOWN, Mass. (WHDH) — On crutches, with a smile on his face, and his family behind him, Marc Fucarile left for home.
He was the final marathon bombing victim to check out of a hospital.
“It’s huge for me to walk out of here today,” said Fucarile.
Wednesday marked 100 days since he has been in the hospital. But for him, it seemed like a lifetime.
“It’s just been tough, real tough, especially when my son is home sick, Jenn isn’t sleeping and I’m usually home for all that,” said Fucarile.
After the first blast at the finish line, Fucarile and his friends ran for safety, but ran right into the second bomb.
He spent 45 days in a hospital bed at Mass General Hospital. He lost his right leg, had burns all over his body, and still has shrapnel lodged in his heart. He has been in the operating room 16 times for nearly 50 procedures.
But his family and focus allowed him to get better. He spent the past eight weeks in rehab at Spaulding Hospital. He learned how to use his arms and muscles again and can now walk out of the hospital.
He said the first thing he wants to do is spend time with his son and fiancé.
“Me and him are looking forward to sleeping together tonight, I can tell you that,” said Fucarile.
His fiancé said it hasn’t been the same without him home and she’s looking forward to his return.
“Just the simple things you brush aside, like family dinners. Gavin hasn’t had his dad home for dinner in 100 days. Movie nights, cuddling…I’m excited, it’s really good,” said Reagan.
Fucarile still has to undergo more surgeries, be fitted for a prosthesis, and there’s still a question of whether or not he’s going to be able to keep his left leg.
