TORONTO (AP) - The Toronto Blue Jays beat the Boston Red Sox 7-3 last night. J.A. Happ pitched six shutout innings for his first victory in three starts, and Dioner Navarro and Jose Reyes homered for the Blue Jays. Red Sox slugger David Ortiz hit a solo homer in the eighth. It was his third homer in two games and the 36th of his career at Rogers Centre, matching Alex Rodriguez for the most by a visiting player.
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) - The New England Patriots training camp opens today at Gillette Stadium with veterans reporting. The first public practice is scheduled for tomorrow. All practice sessions and parking are free. The first preseason game is set for August 7th at Washington against the Redskins.
BOSTON (AP) - Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers says the team is moving on after Luis Suarez was sent to Barcelona for a $130 million transfer fee. Rodgers says "Liverpool is bigger than any one player." Liverpool faces A.S. Roma in tonight's friendly at Fenway Park in Boston. Liverpool is owned by Boston Red Sox owner John Henry, and Roma is owned by Boston Celtics minority owner Jim Pallotta.
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) - The New England Revolution returns home on Saturday when the teams hosts the Columbus Crew. The Revs return to Gillette Stadium after a two-game road trip to Los Angeles and Dallas last week. They will play seven of their next nine games at home, leading to mid-September. New England is currently tied for fifth in the Eastern Conference standings.
DURHAM, N.H. (AP) - Former University of New Hampshire women's hockey coach Brian McCloskey has been charged with assault in an encounter during a game last year. Foster's Daily Democrat reports McCloskey is accused of putting "his body on top" of a player's body and threatening her.
BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (AP) - A former major league pitcher says he didn't intentionally throw at batter Jose Offerman during a 2007 independent minor league game in Bridgeport, Connecticut that resulted in a bat-wielding brawl. The Connecticut Post reports Matt Beech gave a video deposition that was presented to jurors yesterday in the civil trial of Offerman, who's being sued by former Bridgeport Bluefish catcher Johnathan Nathans.
